Ruhr Nachrichten recently reported that Borussia Dortmund are keen to extend Nico Schlotterbeck’s contract beyond 2027, making him one of the best-paid players at the club in the process.

But the Black and Yellows could face competition for his services, with Bild’s head of football, Christian Falk, reporting that the centre-back has attracted interest from Liverpool.

According to Falk’s report, Liverpool see the German international as a potential successor for Virgil van Dijk.

Schlotterbeck recently hit out at the “lack of quality” in Dortmund’s squad. Speaking after his side’s 0-1 defeat to Augsburg at the weekend, he told Sky Germany:

“A lack of consistency is a lack of quality, because you have to be good to be consistent over a long period of time. We can’t do that, a lot of players can’t do that. Unfortunately, you have to say we’re not good enough.

The 25-year-old joined Dortmund from Freiburg in the summer of 2022 for a reported 20 million fee. He has a market value of 40 million, according to Transfermarkt.
