It was the 11th minute in the 2nd leg between AS Roma and Atheltic Bilbao which may have decided the matchup: Mats Hummels tried to get the ball, which he did get – but he also tackled a Bilbao player very dangerously and was deservedly shown the red card in the process.
“These were the kind of games, in which my team could always rely on me. But now I’ve let them down and destroyed the club’s dream of winning the Europa Leage”,
said Hummels about his tragic performance. In addition to that, the former Dortmund and Bayern Munich player also apologized to the fans and the club:
“I’m very sorry, Roma. I want to apologize to our fans and my teammates. I’ve let you down by making a mistake, which was stupid and terrible.”
Roma went on to lose the game against Bilbao 1-3, making it 3-4 on aggregate – which meant that Roma’s journey to the Europa League final has come to an end. While Hummels obviously isn’t at fault all by himself, his action in the 11th minute has for sure played a part in Roma’s defeat tonight.
