While Tim Kleindienst’s perfect first touch inspired Germany’s comeback win in Italy, Oliver Baumann’s performance between the sticks was equally vital for Julian Nagelsmann’s side. TSG Hoffenheim’s captain was presented with the chance to be Germany’s starting goalkeeper following injuries to Marc-André ter Stegen and Kevin Trapp.

“I’ve always accepted every role, whether it’s supporting Marc (ter Stegen) or Manu (Neuer) as number 3 or, now, as a number 1,” said Baumann in the pre-match interview for the second leg against Italy. “I’m grateful to be able to help the team. There is a long way to go before the World Cup. I simply want to help the team.

“If I can do that, my job will be done. I don’t want to look too far ahead. And, as I’ve said many times, I’m proud and very grateful to be able to play”

Meanwhile, Nagelsmann once again confirms ter Stegen’s undisputed spot. “Marc is on the right track. If he’s fit, he’ll be our number 1. Otherwise, the battle for the number 1 spot will be open for all goalkeepers.” said Germany’s head coach.
