After months of speculation, Xabi Alonso has reportedly decided to leave Bayer Leverkusen at the end of the season.

According to Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri, writing for the Swiss branch of Sky, an official announcement is expected in the coming weeks.

Tavolieri reports that the Spaniard is set to succeed Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid, with a two-year contract already pre-negotiated with the Spanish capital club.

Bayer Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro confirmed last week that the club has a gentleman’s agreement with Alonso, allowing him to depart if approached by one of his former clubs, Real Madrid being among them.

The 43-year-old took charge of Leverkusen in October 2022 and guided the team to the domestic double last season.
