This was posted about Ruben Amorim by a Sporting fan in November.
1. Don’t expect miracles:
I’ll start with this point because it’s the most important point of all; When Ruben Amorim took charge of Sporting CP, he started midway through the season and by the end of that season, Sporting finished fourth in the league, which was worse than the usual third place finish at that time. Amorim needs months to implement his style of play, which I’ll discuss later, and, just like Sporting at the time, Manchester United’s team is not very compatible with it.
2. Expect top players to leave:
Amorim will most likely sell players who were previously huge assets for the team but no longer fit his style and may even detract from it. You can see what I mean by comparing the team Amorim inherited when he took over Sporting to the team that started in his second season.
3. Locker room management:
Amorim has always made it a stipulation that the players he manages have a positive impact on locker room dynamics, quickly getting rid of players who may be big assets, but otherwise harm the squad in some way.
As examples, consider Marcus Acuna, who was one of Sporting’s best players at the time but was sold during the first transfer window under Amorim for being extremely hot headed, and Islam Slimani, who returned to Sporting as a fan favourite and immediately began scoring goals, something the main striker at the time was not doing. But Slimani started to become cocky and was quickly pushed to the sidelines, eventually leaving after only half a season.
4. Tactics / Formation:
Always expect a 3-4-3 formation. Amorim rarely deviates from this formation, instead changing the players in the starting eleven based on the attributes he wants the squad to display.
5. Transfer Policy:
As previously stated, Amorim will most likely not consider anyone who could destabilise the team’s backroom dynamics, which means that many top, established players are unlikely to join because tensions could arise, and if Slimani’s case shows anything, it is that Amorim would rather have a strong team union than individual stars.
As a result, expect Manchester United to sign more young and/or lesser-known players with a lot of potential, likely at a lower cost. This is the exact model that brought players like Gyokeres to Sporting.
6. Youth academy:
If Amorim can recruit any players from the youth academy, he will. Surprisingly, Amorim is one of the few well known Portuguese managers who has this type of Youth Academy policy, which is funny because almost every Portuguese manager follows it, they’re just not well known.
7. More than 11 capable players:
If Amorim is given enough time at Manchester United, expect him to assemble a team in which the players on the bench are just as capable as those on the pitch, with the only difference being whatever areas of their game are stronger.
