However, the Spaniard didn’t want to focus on what will happen after the season, but rather on the upcoming match against Bochum and the Bundesliga title race with Bayern Munich.
“There was nothing to decide. It was a good break, we needed it,” Xabi Alonso said when asked if he has made a decision on his future beyond the summer during the international break.
“I’ve said before that our focus – my focus and the focus of all the players – is on what we have. We can’t think too far ahead. We go from game to game.”
Asked if he has set himself a deadline to make a decision about his future, Xabi replied:
“No, my thoughts are the same.
“We’re in an important phase, so we don’t want to speculate and think about anything other than football. It’s clear what we want to do.”
But with one year left on his contract with Leverkusen, Xabi Alonso doesn’t feel like he’s in a similar situation.
“The situation is different now. Then there was something to decide, but now there isn’t. That’s the big difference,” he pointed out.
Xabi Alonso’s contract with Die Werkself runs until the summer of 2026.
Speculation is rife that he could replace Carlo Ancelotti as Real Madrid boss – either this summer or when the veteran’s current deal expires in 2026.
The former Spain international spent five years at Real Madrid as a player.
